Farnham Castle

Farnham Castle is one of Surrey’s most important historic landmarks, dating back to 1138 when it was built by Henry de Blois, Bishop of Winchester and grandson of William the Conqueror.

For over 800 years, it served as the principal residence of the Bishops of Winchester, welcoming kings, queens and notable figures throughout English history.

The castle comprises two connected areas: the Norman Keep, a classic motte-and-bailey structure with sweeping views over Farnham, and the Bishop’s Palace, an evolving complex of medieval and later buildings, including the Great Hall and Norman Chapel.

Over the centuries, it has hosted figures such as Mary I and played a role in key national events, from the Civil War to the Second World War, when it was used as a military training centre.

Today, Farnham Castle stands proudly above the town on Castle Hill, set within five acres of historic grounds, and remains one of the finest surviving examples of a Norman episcopal residence in England.

Visitors can explore the atmospheric Keep, enjoy exhibitions, or join guided tours of the Bishop’s Palace to discover its rich 900-year history.

With its striking medieval architecture, royal connections and sweeping views across Farnham, the castle continues to be a defining part of the town’s heritage and identity

Farnham Castle offers an exceptional exclusive-use wedding experience, with a choice of ceremony settings including the historic Lantern Hall, two chapels for Church of England services and outdoor ceremonies on the East Lawn overlooking the White Rose Garden.

With capacity for both intimate gatherings and larger celebrations, its blend of historic charm and modern elegance across the Lantern Hall, Winchester Suite, Great Hall and grounds creates a versatile setting for the entire day.

Couples also benefit from dedicated preparation suites, 33 en-suite bedrooms, a Honeymoon Suite and excellent in-house catering using fresh, seasonal ingredients.
